Most motion is decoration. These are the small, load-bearing transitions that actually change how an interface is understood.

Audit any mature design system and you will find hundreds of transitions, of which perhaps six do real work. The rest are habit — a duration copied from another component, applied because a bare state change felt unfinished to whoever wrote it.

1. Confirming an Action Happened

The highest-value micro-interaction is the one that tells a user their input registered. It can be twelve pixels of movement and eighty milliseconds long. Without it, people click twice — and double submissions are a design failure, not a user error.

If removing the animation changes nothing about how the interface is understood, it was never an interaction. It was ornament.

2. Preserving Continuity Between States

When an element moves, animating it from where it was to where it now is saves the user from re-finding it. This is the entire argument for shared-element transitions, and it is why a filtered list should reflow rather than blink.

3. The Case for Deleting Most of Them

Motion has a cost measured in attention. Every element competing to be noticed makes the ones that matter quieter. Delete the transitions that do not answer a question, and the survivors get their meaning back.
